Laura Ellenberger (b. South Africa, 1963) is a visual artist based between Mallorca, Spain and The Netherlands.

A constant underlying theme in her work is the interplay between 'absence' and 'presence', which she explores through photography and drawing.

By using light-sensitive photographic film and different types of paper, Laura captures movement through time, revealing what is typically hidden from normal sight. She uses lens and pinhole cameras for various time intervals, ranging from 15 minutes to between 3 and 6 months, to document the movement of light through time.

Biography

Laura Ellenberger (b. South Africa, 1963) is a visual artist based between Mallorca, Spain and The Netherlands. She previously split her art and photography practices between studios in Sydney and London.

Her drawings are veiled, partially obscuring what is below the surface, using different mediums and a wax window that creates a skin-like texture. This technique unifies the surface and the underlying layers of the drawing, causing the eye to shift between the two and reminding us that absence and presence co-exist.

During the 1980s, Laura worked as a documentary photographer in South Africa during the Apartheid era. Her work was published in various books and global publications.
